Pocket Classics : 315

I remember buying these, I may have been ten or twelve years old at the time and I regret not getting more of them. The cover says $1.95 but I remember them being a dollar each or maybe even two for a dollar. There’s absolutely no mention as to who did the artwork or the adaptation, but they, along with some 70 or so other classics, were published by Academic Industries Inc. in West Haven, Connecticut. I should write to them, some of these might still be in print and I’d definitely like a few more.

Which reminds me, I really wish I could draw like that.

It's odd that they make no mention as to who did artwork, I know I’ve seen the person’s work before though. I didn't mind the caption bubbles, I think making it look like a comic book would get more kids interested in classic novels, too bad they aren’t very visible (as in, maybe they should re-issue them). I’m totally going to write them a little letter and assuming that they’re all still in print, see if they’ll let me buy a few (Dracula, Hound of the Baskerville, Pride and Prejudice and etc.)

I'm 99% sure that the artwork was done by Nestor Redondo.

Hello! Not sure exactly how I stumbled across your page, but just wanted to chime in on this. Those little books were amazing! Not that you probably wouldn't have stumbled on this, but they pop up all the time on eBay. No one ever does mention who does the adaptions/artwork. I am *pretty* sure I have a Melville one at home... if I do, I will let you know!

Howdy, I really like eBay but I only use it when it comes to acquiring items that I can't get or find in stores (Promotional items or very rare CD singles). I did a quick search for “Pocket Classics” and only found them in used condition. Someone has a great deal on 50 of them for about $16.00 (which includes shipping). I'm going to write the publisher and ask if they still have some Pocket Classics in print and I’m being a total art-snob too because I’m only interested in a few because of the artwork.

Very cool. I can't wait to see what they respond to you.

Oh, and I remembered how I found your journal... it was a search for pasolini... and your icon caught my eye. Its excellent! Where is it from?

I hope you don't mind that I've friended you.

The publisher doesn’t have a website but I found their mailing address, so I’ll actually have to write them a letter and mail it off.

I can’t remember where the icon is from, it’s been a while, but I know I found the icon even before I signed up to use this journal. The second Icon, the black and white photo, is cropped from a Barbara Kruger art piece.
